Birds of Antikythira

From the 222 species of birds recorded in Antikythira, 214 are passage migrants and only 8 have resident populations in the island. These are the Chukar Partridge (Alectoris chukar), the Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius), the Raven (Corvus corax), the Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), the Peregrine (Falco peregrinus), the Lanner (Falco biarmicus), the Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata) and the Barn Owl (Tyto alba). Two more species, the Eleonora’s Falcon (Falco eleonorae) and the Isabelline Wheatear (Oenanthe isabellina) are summer visitors.

Besides these, a number of very rare species for Greece have been recorded in Antikythira. These are:

  • Green Warbler (Phylloscopus nitidus
  • Yellow-Browed Warbler (Phylloscopus inornatus
  • Isabelline Shrike (Lanius isabellinus
  • Trumpeter Finch (Bucanetes githagineus)
  • Scarlet Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus
  • Little Bunting (Emberiza pusilla)
