Site Description
A wooded mountain in Crete dominated by Pinus and Quercus . The woodland cover has been reduced by recent fires. Human activities include livestock-farming and tourism.

Habitats: Coastline/rocky areas (50%, Inland cliffs; Scree and boulders), Forest (20%, Broadleaved evergreen woodland; Native coniferous woodland), Shrubland (60%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)

Land use: agriculture (60%), not utilised (20%), tourism/recreation (20%)

Protection status

National Partial International Partial
Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Chalasia/Zenion-Exo Potamon-Mesa Lasithiou, 1,100 ha). Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Dasos Viannou-Amiron/Viannou-Amiron-Kefalovryso, 1,300 ha).
12980 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) LAZAROS KORYFI - MADARA DIKTIS(GR4320010).2100 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) KORYFI KOUPA (DYTIKI DIKTI)(GR4320012).2130 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) FARAGGI SELINARI-VRACHASI(GR4320013).


An important site for passage and breeding raptors and alpine species.

The main threats are from fire and agricultural expansion. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
