Site description:

This site contains the central mountainous part of Andros, the coastal zone from Gialia bay to Vitali bay, the island’s northeastern coastal zone, the valley Dipotamata between Chora and Korthi, as well as all the surrounding islets. The area is mainly covered by phrygana, maquis and oak forests. It also includes several perennial streams, valleys with riparian vegetation and gorges, as well as coastal wetlands, small temporary lakes and steep rocky shores. The island exhibits a rugged relief with a very interesting ecosystems and landscape diversity mainly due to the preservation of the traditional agricultural and livestock breeding practices (cultivations on terraces for animal feed etc.).

Habitats:

Grassland (51.8 %), Shrubland (32.9 %), Artificial landscapes (13.6 %), Rocky Areas (0.1 %).

Birds:

An important area for raptors and species associated with phrygana and coastal cliffs.

Protection Status:

• SCI: GR4220001 Andros: Ormos Vitali kai kentrikos oreinos ogkos (7,315 ha, 66 %)

• WR: Stenies - M. Ag. Nikolaou (921 ha, 8 %), Megala Vrachia (591 ha, 5 %), Synetio (Androu) (136 ha, 0.4 %)

Conservation issues:

The main threats resulting in the degradation of the nesting habitat of Phalacrocorax aristotelis and the area’s raptors are tourist development of the coastal zone and the uninhabited islets, disturbance from human presence due to the increasing numbers of visiting tourists, and predation by introduced species on the islets (rats). Forest fires, overgrazing, the degradation of small temporary wetlands and the gradual abandonment of traditional livestock breeding in phryganic ecosystems result in the degradation of Emberiza caesia and Hieraaetus fasciatus habitats. Other threats are hunting and illegal hunting. Furthermore, overfishing and illegal fishing methods lead to the reduction of food availability for Phalacrocorax aristotelis, while accidental trapping of the species in fishing nets comprises another threat.
