The Hellenic Ornithological Society is the only Greek non-governmental body exclusively concerned with the protection of wild birds and their habitats in Greece. It is a Non-Profit Organization founded in 1982. In 1993 the Athens Academy presented it with an award for its important work to that date.

Why we must protect the birds of Greece
Birds are probably the most obvious indicator of the environmental well being. Their disappearance or population decrease is connected to nature-degrading dangers. Therefore, the effort towards the conservation of bird diversity is also a struggle for the conservation of everyone’s environment.
In this struggle, Greece is an especially important country at an international level, both for local and migratory species. Situated at the junction of three continents, with a natural environment of amazing diversity (beaches, mountains, forests, prairies, sand dunes) Greece holds a privileged position for the life of hundreds of species.
Being a peninsula, it facilitates the journey for millions of birds over the Mediterranean, while being a southern European country it is a hospitable area for northern species that need its mild winter.
