Site Description
A lake partly fed by springs and drained by underground streams and by a canal. In some years the lake dries up and is used for cultivation. The surrounding area is a mixture of scrub and agricultural areas. Human activities include arable agriculture, stock-raising and hunting.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (38%, Arable land; Perennial crops, orchards and groves), Forest (11%, Native coniferous woodland), Shrubland (18%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis; Scrub), Wetland (40%, Fens, transition mires and springs; Standing freshwater)

Land use: agriculture (60%), fisheries/aquaculture, water management (100%)

National Partial International None
200ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Gidomandra/Laukas, 1,400ha).1309 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) LIMNI STYMFALIA(GR2530002).

The site is important for breeding, passage and wintering waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla .

Conservation issues
The lake is threatened by siltation (`Other' threats). There are plans to further manage the surface and groundwater for irrigation and water supply. The area is a candidate SAC.
