Actions for birds
The Greek Breeding Bird Atlas project (GBBA1) comprises the first attempt to map the distribution of breeding bird species over the whole of the country! The project comprises part of the larger European Breeding Bird Atlas 2 (EBBA2) project, led by the European Bird Census Council (EBCC), in collaboration with partners from all over Europe.
The aim of this scheme is the collection of data on the population trends of common bird species in Greece and the production of species indices and indicators which reveal the state of the wider environment and biodiversity in the most important habitats of Europe.
The LIFE Project «Concrete conservation actions for the Mediterranean Shag and Audouin’s Gull in Greece, including the inventory of relevant marine IBAs» is implemented by the Hellenic Ornithological Society in collaboration with ΜΟm, HCMR, TEI of Ionian Islands and SPEA in 17 Greek SPA sites during 2009-2012.
Eleonora’s falcon is the most important bird species for Greece with over 84% of its world population breeding here. The program implements high priority actions for the effective, long-term conservation of the species in Greece.
Due to its geographical position and certain features - a longitudinal island, with a north to south direction and very few human activities - Antikythira qualify as an ideal site for population monitoring of the large birds of prey (buzzards, harriers, eagles etc) that pass through the Peloponnese and Crete, but also for the study of small birds' migration by direct observation or ringing.
The Hellenic Rarities Committee was established in December of 2004 by the Hellenic Ornithological Society and the Hellenic Bird Ringing Center, but since then it operates independently
The Slender-billed Curlew is the rarest bird in Europe, the Middle East and the north of Africa. The last confirmed sighting was in Hungary in 2001. The species is critically endangered. A last effort is in progress before it’s too late.
