Summer volunteer programs with the operation of information kiosks are organized by the HOS again this year to inform the public about the protection of wild birds and their habitats. The information kiosks will be held in Syros island, Mytilene, Zakynthos, Corfu and Sani ,Halkidiki. The Antikythira Bird Observatory will open as well to monitor birds during autumn migration.

More specifically:

• In Zakynthos and Corfu from 12/7 to 31/8, Information kiosks will provide visitors with information about protected areas and the ecological value of the Ionian Sea as well as the illegal killing of migratory birds as a part of the implementation of the European Programme LIFE + the program «Safe Shelter for Wild birds: Changing social perceptions of poaching in the northern Mediterranean to protect Europe’s biodiversity».

Zakynthos 2013

Corfu 2013

• In Mytilene from 10/7 to 31/8 at Sappho square and in Syros from 21/7 to 31/8 at Miaoulis Square, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about seabirds and those islands’ natural and marine environment.

• At wetlands of Sani, Halkidiki, for three entire months until mid September, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the nature of the wetlands in this region, the scheduled excursions and tours for birdwatching and to participate in environmental education activities for children of all ages.

Antikythera 2013

• Finally, in Antikythira, one may find a one-of-a-kind Bird Observatory where visitors can participate in the recording of migratory birds of prey (from 16/08 to 30/9) as well as in the tracking of migration through ringing. (From 6/09 to 6/10).
