The past weekend (10 & 11 May 2025), the eBird Greece community celebrated bird migration by going out birding on Saturday’s Big Day Event and on Sunday, completing the two days for the Complete List Birding Challenge!
In order to enjoy birdlife and having bird welfare in mind, birdwatchers poured into many areas around Greece: alone or in groups, all together we uploaded lists in Messolonghi, Lake Kerkini, Lesvos, mountains and plains of Central Greece, Peloponnese and Macedonia, as well as urban neighborhoods, with equally important contributions!
All together we submitted 407 Complete Lists! Having set a target of 200 Complete Lists, we are clearly talking about a performance twice better than expected, an amazingly impactful result, with a clear desire to highlight birdwatching on the part of the eBird Greece community!
This weekend, 250 (!) bird species were submitted to eBird, quite a high number -this season both migratory and breeding species are observed, and our joint effort demonstrates the richness and value of Greece for the birds of Europe and Western Palearctic. Among the species recorded stand out breeding species characteristic and important for our country, such as the Griffon Vulture, the Dalmatian Pelican, the Audouin’s Gull, the Rock Partridge, the Cretzschmar’s Bunting, the Rüppell’s Warbler, the Olive Tree Warbler, the Semicollared Flycatcher and the Spur-Winged Lapwing, but also rare migrants such as the Rosy Starlings in Lesvos or a singing River Warbler in Lake Kerkini!

More than 20 birdwatchers submitted at least 5 Complete Lists to eBird Greece, entering ORNITHOLOGIKI’s / BirdLife Greece draw for prizes! Of these, 5 lucky winners will receive the prizes, and the thanks of ORNITHOLOGIKI for contributing to the data collection and the activity on eBird: Andreas Botas, Dimitra Christaki, Dobrin Botev, Fot Tsak & Giorgos Kouthouridis congratulations & thank you!
